新產品開發的設計階段,雖然可借助設計圖紙和計算機模擬,但并不能展現原型,往往難以做出正確和迅速的評價,設計師可以通過制作樣機模型達到檢驗的目的。傳統的模型制作中主要采用的是手工制作的方法,制作工序復雜,手工制作的樣機模型不僅工期長,而且很難達到外觀和結構設計要求的精確尺寸,因而其檢查外觀及人機設計合理性的功能大打折扣。

反求工程(ReverseEngineering,RE)也稱逆向工程,就是用一定的測量手段對實物或模型進行測量,然后根據測量數據通過三維幾何建模方法重建實物的CAD數字模型,從而實現產品設計與制造過程。對于大多數產品來說,可以在通用的三維CAD軟件上設計出它們的三維模型,但是由于對某些因素,如對功能、工藝、外觀等的考慮,一些零件的形狀十分復雜,很難在CAD軟件上設計出它們的實體模型,在這種情況下,可以通過對模型測量和數據處理,獲得三維實體模型。
